Raymond Chan 2012 Mud House Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Wine Review

Brilliant, pale straw colour with slight green hues, pale on edge. This has a tightly concentrated, youthfully raw bouquet with an amalgam of gooseberries, passionfruit, capsicums and minerals. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, this is elegantly proportioned with tightly bound, but intense flavours of passionfruit and gooseberries, forming a driven palate line. The flavours are enlivened by racy, zesty mouthwatering acidity that combined with a very fine textual thread provides a refreshing cut and dryness to the mouthfeel. The flavours are carried to a dry, light, herb and tropical fruit nuanced, moderately sustained finish. This is a crisp, concentrated, mouthwatering Sauvignon Blanc to serve with seafoods, salads and vegetables over the next 2-3 years. Fruit predominantly from the upper Wairau Valley supplemented with Awatere, Ure and Wairau Valley grapes, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 13.0% alc. and 2.2 g/L rs. 18.0+/20 Mar 2013 RRP $19.95

This has mass appeal – real mass appeal, not the trendy fickle fly by night mass appeal. No this is serious appeal. NZ respectable savvy blanc true to its roots, fruit driven, not over the top fruit, soft fresh acidity not woozy but not overly present. I taste an array of tropical and citrus fruits that just meld into one another seamlessly and effortlessly which in turn glide their way down the throat with ease, calling out for more. A moreish white, again there’s that mass appeal coming through. My house white my mud house white as well I say, I declare and what a declaration it is. Enjoy. Try it with pizza napolitana.

Reviews of the 2010 Mud House South Island Pinot Gris

Review by Ray Jordan for The West Australian 2nd July

2010 Mud House South Island Pinot Gris. A blend of Marlborough, Nelson and Waipara pinot gris from the South Island. Really enticing mix of Granny Smith apple, cinnamon and pear on the nose. The palate has a certain viscosity with rich lees influencing flavours. It's creamy with just a touch of acidity to liven up the long flavoursome palate. Excellent example of the variety. 93 Points.

Review by Anthony Keys, Australia, June 2011:

Mud House South Island Pinot Gris 2010 Unlike many Pinot Gris, this hit my sweet spot the wine was singing with high and low notes, fruit, acid and just a hint of oiliness and all in the correct balance 93 points and worth its $22AUD.

I like Pinot Gris that sticks to its true roots. This is Pinot Gris not Pinot Grigio. And I really like it. Luscious fullsome and succulent, the fruit does all the talking here with upfrontness and a creaminess that entices you in – drawing you closer and closer until wham bam you are well and truly on board. A white wine for those who like substance in their whites – pears, musk and honey resonate heartily on the finish. Try this with Malaysian chicken curry.
