The season started with a cool summer and there was concern about ripeness and reduced yields due to poor fruit set. However, a hot dry autumn with perfect weather throughout March and April provided the warmth and time for the fruit to ripen. As it turned out, harvest dates were almost two weeks later than expected across the region and most volumes were lower than expected but flavours and colour development in the merlot blocks were better than average.

2010 Mud House Single Vineyard Caseys Road Marlborough Pinot Noir

$199.26

The hand harvested grapes were destemed (but not crushed) in small open top fermenters. The must was then kept cold for a 7 day cold soak to extract softer tannins. The grapes were then allowed to warm and fermentation began naturally, uninocculated. The must was hand plunged up to 4 times a day and then pressed off the skins once dry, and when the tannin structure was complete. After a short settling, the wine was run into 1 year old French barrels and underwent spring malolactic fermentation. After 10 months in oak the wine was racked from barrel and prepared for bottling.

Vineyard Region:

The wine was sourced from the Hard Case Vineyard on Caseys Road in the Blind River subregion of the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. The vineyard has earned its name due to the shallow, light soil which, although a challenge, results in elegant, inviting Pinot Noir.

Vintage Conditions:
The 2010 Marlborough growing season started with cool but stable weather through flowering. As a result the vines gave us an even fruit set but with naturally lower yields. The cool weather continued into autumn. This colder than usual start to the season extended the ripening period, which is perfect for intensifying flavours and concentrating aromatics. A later burst of warm and settled weather meant we reached maximum sugar ripeness without any problems or disease pressure. In the winery things were as calm as the weather – the fruit quality was excellent, the flavours and concentration were outstanding and the winery team was smiling. A dream harvest.
Grape Variety:
100% Pinot Noir.
Maturation:
The wine was matured for 10 months in 1 year old French barriques.

Mud House Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010

Harvest commenced 6th April in our Bendigo vineyard. The grapes were gently destemmed, allowing whole berries to remain intact. After a cold soak, each parcel was fermented separately, with a combination of wild and cultured yeast. Each batch was hand plunged to extract the vibrant colour, flavour and delicate tannin structure. Each parcel was then pressed separately to a mix of new and used French oak barrels or remained in tank. In the spring after completing malolactic fermentation, each parcel and tank was tasted and blended.

Central Otago saw a very dry November which lead to late flowering with naturally lighter crops. Summer started slowly but we experienced a warm February which saw 8 days of 30+ temps in our Bendigo vineyard. After the a few frosts and a touch of rain, harvest commenced on the 6th April- about average for the Bendigo region. The cool start maintained lovely structure and acidity and the warm finish to the season gave us exceptional fruit concentration. A stellar season.

93 Points/ 5 Stars, Australia Gourmet Traveller Wine, January 2012. “Supple, succulent pinot noir with sweet cherry, plum and a hint of spice. Very appealing if lacking a little complexity. Balanced and long – a real crowd pleaser. A seductive wine that offers great value at this price.”
"Its soft, silky, smooth fruity upfront style comes from the use of just a smidgeon of oak– 10% - rather than the whopping amounts in so many red wines today. Talk about brave winemaking – and successful winemaking. This is absolutely outstanding, in terms of style, winemaking and value for money.” Joelle Thomson

"This won an elite gold medal at the 2011 Air New Zealand Wine Awards and is so smooth and silky because the winemakers just used a smidgeon of oak - 10 per cent - rather than the whopping amounts in so many reds. This is a brave step in the right direction for New Zealand pinot noir. Bravo." Joelle Tomson
“This is one of those wines that you’ll find slides down pretty quickly. It’s from central Otago in New Zealand and while it’s just downright easy to drink, it’s certainly not a “simple” wine. It has enticing floral and spice, nose, and a core of cherry and plum flavours with trademark pinot softness on the tongue. Oak is barely noticeable. For pinot, which can be expensive, this is good value. It only it didn’t disappear so quickly.” Rick Allen
